April Athlete of the Month – Ryan & Tiffani Brown

Where do you two meet?

We met in college at the U of Nebraska. We were both in the marching band and met on the field one day.

How long have you guys been married?

We got married May 15th , 2004 – almost 15 years.

How many children do you have?

We have 3 kids. Logan (10), Wyatt (8), and Olivia (6).

How does CrossFit influence your life?

Tiffani: CrossFit has helped me to develop a confidence I haven’t had since before having kids. It makes me feel badass, and I carry that feeling with me into other areas of my life.

How long have you been doing CrossFit? How long at CFWDM?

Ryan: 3 years this June. All at CFWDM. I’ve been to handful of other CF gyms around the country for drop ins.
Tiffani: Since this past June, when Ryan forced me to come to a Welcome Wednesday. 😉

What class do you usually attend?

Ryan: Evening classes most often but occasionally a noon or 6:30am class.
Tiffani: 6/6:15/6:30am classes mostly.

What is your favorite lift?

Ryan: Squat clean
Tiffani: Snatch!

What is your favorite move?

Ryan: DU’s
Tiffani: Kettlebell snatches.

What is your favorite workout?

Ryan: I like long workouts, 15+ minutes. Workouts that force you to set a pace and stick with it.
Tiffani: Any kind of chipper, where I can see the light at the end of the tunnel…

Why did you start CrossFit?

Ryan: I wanted to make changes in my life, get in better shape, get stronger. I had been aware of CrossFit for quite some time but could never really make the decision to start. I guess one day I had enough of working 10+ hours a day with no exercise and turning into a soft potato, so I joined.
Tiffani: Ryan made me. 😉 No really, he did. But it had been a long time coming, and I’m kicking myself for not gathering the courage to do it years earlier.

What keeps you coming back?

Ryan: Constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement.
Tiffani: The community, and the feeling I carry with me all day after a great morning workout.

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit?

Ryan: Not a lot. Some hiking and biking. Was in the army for 6 years. I was only in good enough shape to pass a PT test (kind of laughable in hindsight).
Tiffani: Nothing. For YEARS. I used to LOVE Jazzercise, though.

What do you like to do outside of CrossFit?

Ryan: I spend a lot of time helping with my kids’ scouting Pack. As a family we also like to go tent camping as well as spending time at our family cabin in Nebraska. G.B.R.
Tiffani: I have a strong addiction to reading for pleasure. I volunteer quite a bit for our kids’ school and our church. I love hanging out by a campfire, drinking a bit and talking/laughing well into the night.

What is your favorite song(s) to workout to?

Tiffani: Anything without a ton of swearing. Also, I’m a big “singing along” person, so if I can sing the words, it energizes me during the workout.

What is your favorite healthy/meal snack?

Ryan: Low-carb chocolate peanut butter smoothie from AllRecipes.com. You’re welcome. Tiffani: All of them. (Nutrition is my Achilles Heel

What is the most difficult workout you’ve attempted?

Ryan: 17.4 doesn’t agree with me. Black Lung is also pretty wicked.
Tiffani: Many of the Oxygen workouts have challenged me, and I have enjoyed focusing on building my endurance.

How has CrossFit WDM helped you keep on top of your health and wellness goals?

Ryan: CrossFit has really opened my eyes to a level of fitness I wasn’t aware of, or even saw myself doing on a regular basis. Building strength, flexibility, power, and endurance through weightlifting, gymnastics, cardio, etc. And realizing that tracking your progress is unique to every individual who walks in the door. So for myself, being able to track my skills and lifting and benchmark workouts is a fascinating, fun process.
Tiffani: CrossFit has helped me realize I need health and wellness goals. 😀
