June Athlete of the Month – Shelly Berkoski

Meet Shelly,

Shelly has been with CFWDM for 5 years. She is one of the designers behind the logo. She also is our go to person when we need help with apparel. Every day Shelly is in the gym she never hesitate to make people smile and laugh. We are thankful for having you apart of community. Thank you for being a kind person to everyone you meet in the gym.


What is something people don’t know about you?I’m a huge scary-cat.

How does CrossFit influence your life?Crossfit made working out fun again! It also completely changed how fitness fits in my life. Instead of stressing about how many calories I burn or how much I weigh, my focus is on gaining strength and mastering new skills.

Crossfit has helped me gain strength both physically and mentally, which effects all aspects of my life, and for that I am so grateful!

On top of that, I have met so many AMAZING people throughout my time at CFWDM and made some AWESOME friends.

Crossfitters are strong, motivated, great people.

How long have you been doing CrossFit? How long at CFWDM? 5 years. All at CFWDM!

What class do you usually attend? I am part of the crazy early-morning 5 AM group!

What is your favorite lift? Clean & Jerk

What is your favorite move? NOT burpees!

What is your favorite workout? I love partner WOD’s because I love being social and cheering my partner on while also being held accountable to work my booty off

Why did you start CrossFit? I have always loved working out and lifting heavy, but was getting burnt out on trying this new program or that new class.

I also have always appreciated workout classes because they push you out of your comfort zone and are just more fun!

So in 2014, the year I was getting married, I was burnt out on my current workout plan, and wanted to look strong in my wedding dress, so I decided to take the leap!

What keeps you coming back? The awesome people and my goals to keep improving and getting better!

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit? I played volleyball and basketball in high school. Then I played college volleyball for a year. After those adventures, I continued to work out consistently by doing a variety of strength and cardio with a smattering of bodybuilding.com workouts and Jillian Michaels DVDs mixed in.

What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? I am a Creative Director by day, so I enjoy being crafty and creative whenever possible. I also love adventures with my husband and toddler, or being social and having an epic ladies nights out!

What is your favorite song(s) to workout to? Cheesy 80’s rock with a good beat, or crappy pop music I can dance to during the workout!

What is your favorite cheat/meal snack? Pizza or ice cream

What is your favorite healthy/meal snack?Smoothies or a good chopped salad

What is the most difficult workout you’ve attempted? Murph … and I keep going back and doing it again!

How has CrossFit WDM helped you keep on top of your health and wellness goals? CFWDM has always helped me personalize and shape each workout to what I need it to be to reach my goals or deal with my body’s current state. From working on getting my first pull-up, to scaling through my entire pregnancy, to slowly re-building and trying to get my pull-ups back postpartum … the coaches are always there to help, and I truly appreciate that!
