May Athlete of the Month – John Brees

Age: 37

What is something people don’t know about you? One thing most people in our gym probably don’t know is I played football in college at almost 270 pounds and I don’t think I ran more than a mile in one setting until I was 30.

How long have you been doing CrossFit? How long at CFWDM? I have been doing CrossFit since September 2017 which is also when I joined WDM.

What class do you usually attend? 5:15 am

What is your favorite lift? Probably strict shoulder press.

What is your favorite move? I really enjoy toes to bar even though my skill level is still very much a work in progress.

What is your favorite workout? I would say Karen. Height and cardio are two things I have so that combo gives me a good start.

Why did you start CrossFit? My exercise schedule was slowly turning in 100% cardio and I was looking for something that would be challenging, get me back into lifting, and still get the heart rate up.

What keeps you coming back? The people have been great and the work outs are a really good balance of what I want.

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit? Football was always a passion and play through high school and college so that was a great foundation. I started focusing more on cardio in my early 30’s. Over the last 5 years I did Ironman Louisville, a couple marathons, and multiple shorter Tri’s and distance races.

What do you like to do outside of CrossFit? Besides CrossFit and work, most of my time is family focused. I am married (Annie) with three younger children (Sloane-8/Adler-5/Blaire-1) so we keep a full schedule. Fishing has always been something I have enjoyed

What is your favorite song(s) to workout to? Anything GNR would top the list.

What is your favorite cheat/meal snack? Burrito from Chipolte/Qdoba/Pancheros

What is your favorite healthy/meal snack? Brussel Sprouts

What is the most difficult workout you’ve attempted? 18.2 is the most recent one sticking in my mind, not sure if it was the workout itself or if I came out too quick.

How has CrossFit WDM helped you keep on top of your health and wellness goals? It has been a great combination of challenging me mentally, improving my strength, and still maintain some cardio. I’ve even come to enjoy getting up at 4:40!
